Giampaolo Speziale
Raised between Rome and London, Italian musician Giampaolo Speziale was first introduced to the world of music at the age of 5 when he began singing and studying classical guitar in the Philharmonic Academy of Rome’s children choir.
After over a decade of fronting multiple group successes, Speziale will be releasing his debut solo album “I”, out November 22nd via Pom Pom Records. The 13 song avant-pop collection is an LSD saturated tunnel vision journey; proceeding in the dark with a light view ahead and endless left turns along the way. Think glimpses of Cocteau Twins, Yves Tumor and Blood Orange, spoken through the lens of one of the brightest and most refreshing producers of his class, who ultimately can’t help but to emote as uniquely himself.
When not being driven by Speziale’s one-man-show brilliantly programmed rhythm section, the self-produced record also enlists the talent of Franz Aprili (Phoenix, Ariete) and Emanuele Triglia (Joan Thiele, Mannarino). The result is a captivating fever dream that blends his bravest production instincts with just enough of his most satisfying pop sensibilities to shape the ride, breaking chains of genre and sentiment in a way that’s as unsettling as it is infectious.
Speziale’s professional musical path took off at the age of 21 when he formed and fronted the cult-famous Italian alt rock group ‘About Wayne’, while also creating, starring in and composing the music for the viral youtube mini series ‘Freaks!’
He then went on to sign to London’s Memphis Industries with his indie darling success ’Malihini’, collaborating with Italian actress Thony and British producer Richard Formby (Wild Beasts, Darkstar) on his most recent full length album ‘Hopefully, Again’. The dazzling release gained the refined pop outfit attention and praise in the international tastemaker press, along with festival slots at the likes of Primavera Sound and an strong following.
In addition to his front-facing efforts, Speziale has spent the last years building his impressive production roster from the control room at Pom Pom Studio in Rome, while also rekindling his cinematic past, this time around within the world of music supervision. He most recently acted as musical supervisor for the critically acclaimed Netflix biopic spanning the career and catalog of legendary Italian rocker Gianna Nannini.
